Birds of the
Area
Calitzdorp has no less
than 218 different birds species some appearing on the “Endangered u
list such as: Denhams bustard, Blue Crane, Southern Black Korhaan
and the Secretary bird.

Birds of prey of the
area include Verreauxs Eagle, African Fish Eagle, Booted Eagle,
Martial Eagle, Jackal Buzzard, and the Common Buzzard (Steppe
Buzzard). Also found here is the Black Harrier.

The road between
Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn has the second highest number of Pale
Chanting Goshawk population to that between Port Nolloth and
Alexander Bay.
Migrating birds found
here include European Bee-eater, Red chested Cuckoo, Black headed
Oriole, White Stork, Diederick Cuckoo and the Paradise Flycatcher.
If you are lucky you will see the Damara canary (leucolaema ) and
the Little Bee-eater has also been spotted in the area.
Other interesting
birds are Painted Snipe, Common Snipe (Ethiopian Snipe), Namaqua
Sandgrouse, Purple Gallinule, a variety of duck and in summer you
can hear the call of the Fiery necked Nightjar
