Plant Species of the Area

In the Calitzdorp area there are approximately 300 different succulents of which some fall into the endangered category.

The area has a rainfall of 150 to 200 millimetres per annum making it perfect for succulents. Interesting species that occur here are: Haworthia arachnoidea, H. truncata var truncata, H. truncata var mauganii, Huernia guttata ssp Calitzdorpensis, H pillansii, Tromotriche choanantha (discovered in 1938) also varieties of Crassulaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Stapelieae, Tylecodon, Quaqua, Gasteria, Conophytum truncatum, Gibbaeum, Glottiphylum and Mesembryanthemaceae to mention but a few. Also found in the area are Aloe Speciosa, A. Ferox, A. Humillis, A. Microstigma, A. Lineata, A. Striata, A. Longistilli and A. Comptonii.
